Top 5 - Baseball Movies

Ok, we are coming to the home stretch for my run of top 5s. I also have an idea of what the next two will be. Lets just say next week's top 5 has to do with Christmas movies. This week's list is self explanatory. Give me your top 5 baseball movies. This maybe a shocker to some. Field of Dreams will be no where NEAR my top 5. If you need help, think of movies, go here.

1. Bull Durham - I can not really explain it. Of course, Cosner is going to be in everyone's list in someway shape or form. I like that this movie takes place in the minor leagues. My favorite scene is the huddle on the pitcher's mound when everyone is trying to figure out their problems. Classic.

2. The Natural - I love the time period of the movie. This is another one that takes places in the minors. Roy Hobbs is the best damn hitter I ever saw.

3. Major League - Baseball's best comedy. Who doesn't love Jobu?

4. League of their Own - Tom Hanks nailed this role. Very unique movie. I could not even fathom this happening today. Just crazy. I find I have a hard time turning this movie off if it is on TV.

5. Bad News Bears (the old one obviously) - Chico's bail bonds - Enough said.

If I were to continue this list, Long Gone, 8 men out and Sandlot would be next.

Let me give a shout out to Long Gone here. It was a made for HBO movie. It is a very underrated movie. The lead actor, Stud Cantrell is played by William Peterson (head actor on CSI now) and his main squeeze in the movie is Virginia Madsen. It is a story about a low level minor league team. I highly recommend it.

Happy Wednesday!

5 is tough. Here are my top 7. No Costner, and I've never seen Field of Dreams. Just not interested:

7. Cobb - Interesting and kind of lost among the wave of early 1990's baseball movies.
6. The Natural - Too much weird and boring personal stuff to be higher, but the baseball parts are great.
5. 61* - ...speaking of good HBO movies.
4. Eight Men Out - If only it were a bit more historically accurate. Not the White Sox' finest moment.
3. The Sandlot - Lots of fun, especially when they play the cocky Little League team and crush them.
2. Major League - It's got that edgy comic vibe I love in movies.
1. Bad News Bears (1976 version) - Lots of stuff you can't do in movies today, which is why it's so great. The remake was a lot better than I thought it would be.

I'd like to give a shout to The Kid From Left Field and Tiger Town as movies I somehow remember my parents renting for us kids when we first got our VCR.

Finally, two terrible ones are Fever Pitch, which taught me that Red Sox fans are total and complete losers who need to get a life, and Summer Catch, which just plan sucked. Note the phonetic similarities; it's not a coincidence, I say.

Baseketball...ha! Very underrated stuff by Matt and Trey. Easily the number one movie ever based on a fictional hybrid game of baseball and basketball.

1. Field of Dreams (I can't remember why you're so opposed to it, but I'm sure we've fought about it before!)
2. A League of their Own
3. The Rookie (I like feel-good sap)
4. The Natural
5. Major League

Never saw Bad News Bears, but it is probably something I would like.

I (oddly) really like baseball movies, Field of Dreams NOT being one of them:
1. A League of Their Own ("Avoid the Clapp, Jimmy Doogan)
2. 61* LOVED it...almost a Bromance.
3. The Natural - I remember watching it before the world series as a kid.
4. Eight Men Out - I've seen several times and always found it entertaining (Say it ain't so, Joe)
5. Bull Durham - didn't see this until sometime in the past 10 years (You remember, Tool, I borrowed it for a year or so) and am glad I did. Good Stuff.
