The next few days and random thoughts

Well, on a last second project at work, I am heading to NJ for the next couple days. So, between work and the cruise next week, I will be on the road the next 10 days. One bad thing about this is that I am missing THREE LU games...yikes!

Lets hope Romney pulls Florida. Those polls should be closing soon.

I have to pack tonight for 10 days and my goal is not to check luggage. How many clothes do you really need for a cruise? Really?

I thought I would miss the beard but I really don't. It feels good not having it.

My final weigh-in for 10 days is on the left. Lets hope I am within a few pounds of this when I get back. The average peson gains 5 pounds on a 5 day cruise. I am on a 7 day cruise!

Go Giants! I can not bring myself to root for a bunch of cheaters!

And finally, HAPPY BIRTHDAY LAUREN!

Energy

So we watched the nephews, Jackson and Jeremy on Saturday night. Michelle has a really good timeline of the night.

I am more exhausted from spending a day with them than I am if I was out partying that entire time. These guys do not stop! After Underdog was over, it was past 11 and both kids were still rocking. Luckily Jeremy fell asleep by 11:30 but at midnight Jack was still awake and I was barely awake. Then at 6:45, Jack wakes up and starts watching cartoons.

Wow. After we got home yesterday from dropping them off, I slept for 90 minutes.

It was fun having them over but next time I think I need to get a good nights rest the night before to prepare!

LU!

Lu had a big win on Saturday night! They beat Valpo by two points! It was a come from behind win and a much needed one at that! Too bad I missed the game entirely.

Nice job Ramblers!

The beard is gone!

Over Christmas, I had 12 days off of work so I decided to grow a beard. It turned out to be a good decision just for the fact that Chicago has been ridiculously cold the last few weeks.

Well, I decided to shave it off on Saturday. Since we are going on a cruise in a week, I figured my skin needed some exposure to the elements. Here are some pics from my shaving. I did it in pieces.

She's gone from suck to blow sir!

If you don't know that quote, than shame on you. Spaceballs is a great movie, a classic.

Well, that quote is also describing my bowling these days. More than anything, I am having hte hardest time picking up spares. I am just missing where the ball should be. I am extremely frustrated. I averaged a 138 last night. It was the worst night of bowling to date!

I can not wait for Tuesday!

Rambo's Statistics

Yesterday I received from the always fun Sue Fedea quite the email. It seems that a reporter in LA has broken down the kills in Rambo. I found this breakdown quite enjoyable and I hope you do too!

With this level of increases, if they make a Rambo V, it will be an insane amount of Rambo whoppings!

Fred Thompson Fans

It is a sad day for Fred Thompson fans and if you read my blog, I am pretty sure you read a Fred Thompson fan's blog too.

He dropped his presidential bid officially today.

Lets hope all his fans turn to Romney.

I am Ironman?

So one my aunt's sent me this link . You answer a series of questions and then they tell you which superhero you are mostly like. Superman was my second place person but according to this highly accurate quiz, the superhero I am mostly like is Ironman.

Ironman's personality is loosely based on Howard Hughes. Does this mean I am like Howard Hughes? I just wish I was worth as much as he was.

Anyway, try it out and let me know what it tells you.

If Fubar does not get superman, I am going to start questioning the validity of this quiz.

Biggest Loser last night

Last night's episode of the biggest loser was awesome. The twists were enough to keep the teams on their toes and even the strategies they came up with were no good. If you ever wanted to watch an episode, last night's was the one to watch.

Personally, I do not like the black team at all. They are cocky and by they, I mean just the one brother. In all honesty, they workout very hard and are probably ready to go home and be on their own. I really hope that the grey team wins. They are very nice to everyone. They workout hard and they stay away from back stabbing people.

Bad bowling but team wins!

I bowled worse last night than I have in a while. My high game was a 148. I think I left a split in every tenth frame. I ended with a 423. Yikes...the only good news is that the team we bowled against was not doing much better and we took 5 out of 7 points.

I am dropping the ball again. I added two more pieces of tape to my spare ball (now at 6) and one to my strike ball (now at 5). I think I am going to get the thumb hole resized in March. This is getting ridiculous.

The team is in 2nd place alone though and dropping a couple pins in average will help hopefully in the long run!

1,320 Feet

I was just talking to Funk about Sunday night. I was very impressed that he talked Fubar into going to El Presidente (EP). Fubar hates that place but he must have been hungry. He only had a whole pizza at Four Shadows so I can see him being hungry...

Well, EP is literally 1,300 feet from the bar. Those guys jumped into a cab to get there! Really 1,300 is adequate distant to take a cab. So I ask you all this.

What is the shortest distance you have taken a cab? I want answers!

Now, in Funk's defense he hailed the cab to go home but at the last second decided to go to EP. Still, it has to rank up there with shortest cab rides ever!

Biggest Loser

I know that many of you watch and enjoy the biggest loser. The following blog is a good look into the weight loss cycles seen on the show. It really shows you the power of water weight.

Superbowl

Now that the superbowl is New England vs New York, I am torn on who to root for. Usually, since I am an AFC guy, I would root for the AFC team. However, the idea of everyone calling NE the greatest team ever and listening to them call Brady the greatest thing since sliced bread makes me sick to my stomach.

On the flip side, I hate NY fans. Lets be honest. I just dont like new york city. I never have and never will. They are the underdog though and I do not mind rooting for the underdog.

Well, I am going to put up a survey to see who people are rooting for in the superbowl.

Sunday Night Bowling - YIKES!

Well, lets just say that Sunday is a day to forget sportswise. I was really hoping that Green Bay was going to the superbowl. That did not happen. Great. Now we have the Yankees/Red Sox superbowl. Upper east coast...who cares. ESPN is going to have a field day with it.

Also, Four Shadows bowling team is off to a very slow start. We got swept on Sunday night and no one bowled well. I espcially did bad...I had a 139, 145 and a 181. 465...30 pins below my average. Oh well, lets hope I can turn it around before Tuesday night.

Another great moment in gambling history!

Background: Loyola is favored by 5.5 pts against Detroit last night.

The Play: Loyola is up 67-65 with 20 seconds to go. Detroit has the ball. They run a play with less than 10 seconds to go. They attempt a three pointer and miss. The Ramblers get the rebound with about 4 seconds left. JR is foulder hard and there is a little scuffle under the hoop. The refs come in and give a technical foul to Detroit (did they bet the game...maybe).

Now, Loyola has two technical free throws coming and two for the foul with 2.7 seconds left.

Leon makes the technical free throws. LU is up 69-65. JR makes both free throws that were coming to him...LU is up 71-65. Detroit attempts a half court shot that falls short. LU wins by 6!

Somewhere in Vegas, two people are celebrating and one person is disgusted.

2012!?! Are you serious???

I love baseball. Love the sport. I HATE BUD SELIG! Has he made money for the owners? No question about it. They make more money now than they ever have. Sadly, money rules all and that is why he will be commisioner until he dies.

Bud Selig traded part of the soul of baseball in for money. Bud Selig never looks at long term solutions to baseball's problems. He wants quick fixes. Attendance is down in baseball in the early 90s...let do interleague play. No one has ever seen an AL team play an NL team before. That will generate revenue. Yes, but what does it cause long term Mr. Selig? Every teams schedule now is unbalanced. The Mets have to play the Yankees more than anyone else in the NL. That is not a disadvantage at all. Good to see they didn't lose playoff spot by a game. We have interleague play so no one cares about the all star game. Shocking...Well, so now we have to make the all star game matter. Winner host the WS. So stupid.

Offense production goes up in baseball in the mid 90s. Fans love this. Lets not examine too hard why though. Oops...the ball isn't juiced players are. Thanks Bud. Way to keep that under control. Way to put at stop to it 10 years later.

Who cares? Owners are making a ton of cash. Lets keep him!

Go away Bud Selig! You are a two dollar trick of a commisioner. You will make money any way you can for the owners no matter the consequences.

ARGH!

Go Romney!

I have taken a bit more interest in the presidental election than I have in the past. Part can be attributed to Funk's blog. Part can be attributed to the fact that I work in the health care industry.

Anyway, I have become quite the fan of Mitt Romney. I was very happy to see him win both Michigan and Wyoming. So now he has two first place finishes and two second place finishes.

What I like most is that he has proven many times that he can run big business well. He did a great job as govenor in Massachusetts. He founded a venture capital company. I could go on but I am not Funk.

I hope he gets the nomination. Here is a link giving you a quick background. Yes, it is his website so it will be slanted.

I am done boring you with politics.

Tuesday Bowling - 526

So I rolled decent but I left a lot on the table. My first game was a 200 on the dot. This is frustrating because I opened the 9th and the 10th. The 9th frame I hit the pocket a little light and left the 5-7-10. That was not very nice at all! Last night my strike ball was working, my spare shot...not so much.

My second game I rolled a 170 again opening in the 10th. By the time the third game started I was getting tired. My body was pretty sore from lifting the day before and I did not get enough sleep. I knew going in that I was going to have trouble with energy. I opened the 8th and 9th for a 156.

Now, my average is 163. So, I did bowl 37 pins over average. Also, we played the team that has a couple guys that have basically no handicap (one averages 214 and the other 204). We took 5 points from them! It was awesome! These guys are arrogant. So it was nice to take it to them.

It looks like my bowling has turned the corner...finally. I guess putting four pieces of tape in each thumb hole helps...

226

So I weighted myself for the first time in about a month. Between the holidays and last week's company training (where food is EVERYWHERE), I was a bit nervous. I have not moved a pound in that month. That was a relief.

I do need to cut some pounds before the cruise in three weeks. I wonder if my pizza hut buffet lunch that I am going on this Wedensday will help that...probably not.

Congrats

Well, my in-laws celebrated their 30th anniversary last night! I just wanted to say congratulations. It is pretty amazing that between Michelle's parents and mine there is a combined 74 years of marriage. I can only hope Michelle and I have the same success that both of our parents have had!

315

If you have hung out with me in the last 6 months, you know that I have been weightlifting for basically the first time in my life and I am enjoying it. Basically a year and a half ago (maybe longer) my hip starting hurting. I basically ignored it and kept running and biking on it. Well, it got worse to the point I could not run any more. That was end of June of 2007. I began lifting weights to strengthen my hip and just get stronger overall.

Well, my hip is doing better but it is still my weaker hip. I can run without pain. When I say lift, I do not mean machines. I am doing olympic lifts such as deadlifts, power cleans, squats, etc. Since I am tall, my favorite lift is a deadlift. It is the only lift that favors longer arms. Deadlift is a very good exercise to do. It strengthens the back, firms the back side, and makes you gain muscle very quickly.

Read this about muscle gains with deadlifts. Same writer also has this to say.

Well, I maxed out on deadlift last night after 6 months and pulled 315. I was quite pleased. I think I started at about 155. My goal is 400 in a year.

I am done boring you with weight lifting.

Coach

Am I the only person that is confused by former head coaches are still called coach? Is there a school that graduated from to earn that title for life like a doctor?

Who does Mike Ditka coach? If no one, then why call him coach? Also, this seems to be a phenomenon only in American football.

If anyone can explain this to me, I would be forever grateful.

My right shoulder

So my right shoulder for years has always been weaker than my left. It seems like it is getting worse and it makes me nervous. I am in two bowling leagues and not to mention I need it to play Wii!

Well, it has slipped a few times recently and has been hurting me a lot the last few days. It was hurting by the time bowling ended yesterday. Not a good sign. Hopefully, I can keep icing it and do some serious pre-hab work on it to gain some strength. What makes me nervous is that the pain goes all the way down to my elbow.

Looks like I wont be joining any arm wrestling competitions soon.

495 - Sunday night bowling begins!

I rolled a 495 last night. It should have been much better but I had trouble adjusting to the lights being turned off.

I started the night on fire. I had a 202 the first game which should have been better but I opened in the 9th frame.

My second game the wheels came off a little. They turned the lights off and I ended up with a 135. Not very good.

My last game I rolled a 159 which is a travesty because I opened the last three frames and had three one pin spares I missed. Oh well, it is a fun league and it was a fun time.

Michelle bowled for Plothow and rolled her best game ever, 171. Her previous high was 144. Nice work Michelle!

Great and not so great moments in gambling history

So LU was actually getting 11.5 points on Monday against Butler. They lost the game but covered the spread by half of a point! Nice work!

Last night Loyola played in a double overtime game against their cross town rivals, UIC. A few of us went to the game. It was quite a good game until double overtime. They ran out of gas. Anyway, they were getting 9 points and they lost 78-68 in double overtime. How do you lose by 10 in double OT? I have no idea.

11 Point Dog

Butler at Loyola opened up as Butler minus 11. Right now, due to people betting, Butler is favored by 11.5

If LU does not win the game, lets hope they at least cover the spread!

I win would be much better!

Butler at Loyola

Tonight Loyola hosts Butler. Butler right now is ranked 16th in the nation. This is a great game to go to especially since I sit on the floor. Too bad I am missing it! ARGH!

What pains me even more is that this is the second year in a row I am missing the game. Last year, all of my friends including myself missed the game. The game was scheduled the day before someone got married in Florida...my bad.

This year I am in Stone Mountain, GA for training. LU is in some trouble for this game. If I were a betting man, I would think about betting on the other team but I could never do that...again. Lets move on.

If anyone is reading this who is going to the game tonight, cheer LOUDLY! Bring home a win!

Go RAMBLERS!

Beers around the World - Part I

So, one of my christmas gifts this years was a box filled with 10 bottles of beers. Each beers is from a different place in the world. This is actually a pretty cool gift. On Saturday, Michelle put five of them in the fridge for me and I drank them on Saturday before we left for my work holiday party.

Here are my notes from my worldly travels:

Beer 1: Mackeson Triple XXX. This beer was really dark. It was black. I loved the taste. It was not too thick and just excellent. It comes with no surprise that is brewed in England. Those guys know their beer!

Beer 2: Kronenbourg 1664. I have had this beer before when I was in London. It was my favorite light beer over there. It is actually brewed in France. Two beers in and this trip is rocking!

Beer 3: San Migel Premium lager. We have now caught some rough waters. I did not like the flavor of this much. The taste was strong. The color was gold. It has a little after taste. It was a heavier beer than I expected. It is brewed in Spain.

Beer 4: Kalik - Beer of the Bahamas. I love the name just because it reminds me of a certain beer that you can buy at Aldi...some of you know what I am talking about. This beer was a light beer. It tasted okay. It was a stronger flavor than any light beer here but not nearly as strong as a Corona. I think the name gave you an idea of where it is brewed.

Beer 5: Kingfish Lager. This beer was okay. Again, nothing special jumps out with this beer. It is a light colored beer. Taste is pretty bland. It says it s from Bangalore, India but I think it is brewed in the UK. Kalik and Kingfish were not very different. Both fine to drink but nothing to write home about.

The trip was a fun journey and I have to say that Mackeson was easily my favorite of the five. It will be tough to beat it. Hopefully I can finish the journey sometime soon!

Best $29 spent EVER!

So, at the airport yesterday, while checking in, the machine asked me if I would like to upgrade to Economy plus for $29. I decided that it was in my best interest.

Well, we actually boarded the plane on time. I know. I was shocked and I was sitting in 7D. When I checked in, it showed that 7E and 7F had already been chosen. Well, when we pulled away from the terminal, no one was sitting in those seats! YESSSS! Not only did I have more leg room, I had the whole row! I leaned up against the plane in 7F and stretched out my legs. I put my computer on my lap and watched Fight Club on the way here. That was easily one of the better flights I have had.

Dr. Dre is JACKED!

I always picture Dr. Dre as a pilsbury dough boy, basically a heavier set man who can produce great music.

Well, I was blown away when a friend of mine sent me the following link.

There are some interesting people on here but I had no idea about Dre. Scroll down through everyone. You will find some interesting people like Carrott Top in there!

2008 Goal

So, I really do not have a 2008 new years resolution. I do have a couple goals for the year.

No potatoes in 2008. No french fries, potato chips (corn chips...totally fine), hash browns, etc. The only potato I can eat is sweet potatoes.

Also, my goal is 150 workouts. I am going to keep track in the left side of this blog. One down, 149 to go.

Kevin Garnett

It really is a shame that Kevin Garnett is just now getting the recognition he deserves. Everyone knows him and knows he is a great player. People just starting to realize what an intense competitor he is. No one matches his intensity and all he cares about is the team winning. He is easily one of my favorite players of all time. His career statistics are 20, 10, and 5. Thank goodness he has a couple people with him these days so people can truly appreciate this guy.

Of course, I do not think the Celtics will win the championships but this takes nothing away from Garnett.

Welcome 2008!

After a couple weeks away, I am ready to begin the 2008 blogging season! 2007 was maybe the best year of my life so far despite turning 31. I am hoping 2008 will be just as good. I will give some highlights of my last few weeks in a blog a little later....Kevin Garnett is my next topic.
