Biggest Loser

I have two different comments to discuss about biggest loser. One is about the grip strength competition and one is about nutrition.

The competition - My initial reaction when they described the event was that the lighter people have an advantage. I really thought Helen was going to win. These contestants were way off. This was not an upper body strength exercise at all. This was a flat out grip strength exercise. Take a weight and hold it in your hands. It did not surprise me at all that Tara and Helen were the last two. I thought Kristen would have been the first to fall. Of course, Mike being afraid of heights did not help him. Basically this competition was my like holding a deadlift in the locked position. It is going to pull on your back but I guarantee the first thing to fail is going to be your grip. One hour I thought was incredible. I am not sure if I could hold 225 for one hour and I know I am not going to find out. So do not listen to these contestants. That was all about grip strength.

Nutrition - I am shocked that the biggest loser does not have nutritionist on the show. Bob was spot on with his rant. These people are starving themselves. No wonder Kristen is struggling to lose weight. Your body shuts down. I know this sounds wierd but you need to eat more (of the right food) to lose more. Your body needs fuel to work. It is so ridiculous what they are doing. Also, they need to eat more protein. My god. Protein is probably the number one nutrient American do not eat near enough of. What are they thinking? 16 weeks on the show and this is how they are eating??? It is so ridiculous. Eat protein with every meal. I was floored by how horrible their eating habits were. They were so bad. I would have lost it much worse than Bob did.

I am not even sure who I am rooting for at this point.

Mike - Hate his father and he is already celebrating his victory. Can I root for this? It is like rooting for Man U.
Ron - Hate him. Ruined the season. Get rid of that skin.
Tara - Annoying. Thinks the world is against her. Wont shut up. Blah Blah Blah.
Helen - When pink team had to send someone home, she sent her daughter instead of her. Way to take one for your kid, mom.
Filipe - Liked him and then did not like him. A bit of a cry baby, continually gets embarrassed by Tara in competitions.

Love your recap of the players. Well put.

Agreed, but I am still rooting for Mike. I think they pulled a classic reality show move in the voting room and made it look like he was being cocky, but he probably wasn't. Though I do agree that his dad is ruining the show. But still, 18-year-old adorable kid turning his life around. I have a hard time not loving him.

Tara is a goddess! All hail Tara! Someone needs to blindside Filipe. Started out liking the Samoaons until they turned on my Jillian. Lauren was right on her blog. How does Ron's wife get skinny but let the rest of the house stay fat? Didn't make sense.

Great recap Ruter! I wonder if I can apply to be the dietitian for the show. That is what drives me the most NUTS about the show...lack of education on nutrition.

I agree with all your recaps of the players except I am still rooting for Mike too. He is adorabe.

P.S. Apparently Ron and his wife both had gastric bypass. She stuck with the recommendations. Obvs he did not.

I know for a fact that they have tons of dietitians on the show. And I would certainly guess that is the reason they don't know much about nutrition because they have a professional standing there telling them what, how much, and when to eat.

Also, one of the reasons the show doesn't give out much advice on diet is because they use a very extreme diet that involves tons of protein, very little carbs, and almost no fat. The lack of fat can cause problems with fat soluble vitamins and minerals. They take in 1100-1200 calories a day and burn 4500-5000.

That is not the type of advice they want to give out, so they stick to tips like "Put veggies in a Ziploc (r) brand storage bag" or "Drink your water out of a Nalgene (r) water bottle".
